Blackthorn Bearing Block.
For those of us NOT looking to cut up a trophy rack and/or can never seem to locate sheds before everything else Blackthorn has um drilled for use as friction fire bearing blocks. Just a Sycamore on Sycamore FF. http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n220/Daytraderwon/Bushclassusa/DSCN3300.jpg http://i1...

Re: The Two Stick Hearth Board w/pics
Part 2. For this practice I tied two mullein sticks together then used a Red cedar spindle to get a coal. http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n220/Daytraderwon/Bushclassusa/DSCN2628.jpg There was a gap between sticks. I hoped this would allow the dust and ember to fall under the set then air would fe...

Re: The Two Stick Hearth Board w/pics
Nice. Going to try this. And I did: Part 1. Sycamore on Sycamore. Two stick plus regular fireboard. I took the little guy fishing the other day and noticed all the sycamore trees near the large river. So we gathered some dead fall on the hike out. I prefer to take dead wood off trees but they were ...

Eastern White Pine on Willow Bow drill. Pond special.
White pine spindle on Willow fireboard. All materials collected from around my pond. Hence pond special, mosquitoes not included. They take serious offense to bow drill practice at night near the pond. http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n220/Daytraderwon/whitepinewillow7.jpg Monster coal. http://i11...

The New Mora 510 Initial Review.
For some inconceivable reason Mora decided to discontinue a few of their best (IMHO) knives. Fine inexpensive blades like the 510 and 911 disappeared. The 511 replaced the 510 then was replaced with a new 511. Now the 510 is back however there are some changes. Are these changes good or bad? As this...

Re: Wet and Wild Friction Fire!
Thanks. Mullein has it's pros and cons. It is a real PITA to mate to anything. To be honest not sure how much more mullein I can stand. I hear your cry. Did a crazy two stick mullein fireboard with mullein spindle coal. Just tied to mullein sticks together with fishing line. Did it sorta on the fly ...

Re: Wet and Wild Friction Fire!
I edited the original post. Wanted to know if the shot glass bearing block offered an overwhelming advantage so hiked back to the same spot and came to the conclusion a field made DIY block would have produced the same results.. I am no expert on any of this but mullein is a two edged sword IMHO. It...

Wet and Wild Friction Fire!
I have never practiced a friction fire in the wet. Figured if it didn't work at the very least this would be some dirt time away from everyone. It rained the entire night before, most of that day and the forecast correctly predicted more rain that night and next day. Haven't seen the sun at all. One...
