Urban Preparedness - Get home bag
I work in an urban area and live in a suburban area. My home is approximately 12 miles away. I have a kit at my office designed to help get me home. It has things like walking boots, seasonally appropriate weather gear, energy bars, bottled water, flashlight, an extra house key, $50 in small bills, ...

Re: Phillipines - Typhoon Haiyan
Very true, Trekker! Thats why evacuation plans, or bug outs as I call them, are so important. Especially for those who live in areas prone to hurricanes or tsunamis. Having a family plan stating where to meet in the case of an evacuation can really add peace of mind when communications are spotty or...

Phillipines - Typhoon Haiyan
Just a quick link to view a few before and after pictures. You can read or ignore the written content as you see fit. The pictures are the fascinating thing. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/11/12/before-and-after-typhoon-haiyan-_n_4262348.html I will use this moment to give a piece of advice, esp...

Re: GridEx II - National Mock Power Outage
Note: I only share points from Finding #1. There are a total of 6 findings in the report, spanning from page 10 to page 16. And in full disclosure, I do not and never have worked for the power companies, nor did I have anything to do with GridEx in 2011 or the current GridEx II. I do have tons of ex...

GridEx II - National Mock Power Outage
National power grid in mock emergency Nov 13 and 14. No real power outages will occur. http://www.nerc.com/pa/CI/CIPOutreach/Pages/GridEX.aspx I post this here because business contingency planning is rooted in the same concepts as personal preparedness, though it may look a little different at firs...

Basic list for Urban Planning
Howdy all! I grew up in the sticks, but for the last 10 years I've been in a larger city. My daily job is urban preparedness with a target audience of first responders. Recently I ran across this link to some good information for urban preparedness in the general population. Remembering that sustain...

Tornadoes and hills - Research findings
I wanted to post a link to this research article from the University of Arkansas regarding computer modeling and tornadoes. http://newswire.uark.edu/articles/22392/computer-models-of-tornadoes-show-possible-sheltering-region-behind-hills The general findings from this research indicate the leeward s...

Re: Improvised Oil Lamp - Tuna Can w/pics
I decided to test how long this would last. I used 5 oz cans of tuna in oil, using one name brand and the other an off-brand. I used cotton balls twisted as the wicks. Both burned bright for about 80 to 85 minutes. Both burned out shortly after 90 minutes. It is anecdotal at best, but I would say yo...

Crayon Candle
I heard today that one can make a quick candle just by lighting a crayon on fire. I ran a quick test with an unused Crayola brand crayon (Orchid color). I tried lighting it as is, like I was told, with no luck. However, once I cut the tip off and burned it with the crayon and the paper flush, it bur...

Re: Improvised Oil Lamp - Tuna Can w/pics
How long on average do you get this to burn? We have lots of canned tuna but all in water. I've never found a reason to buy the oil variety. I may have to rethink this!

Re: CBs
I'm not very familiar with CB systems. I have a practically new one I acquired from a friend, but I haven't set it up. What kind of range can one expect? Is that dependent on numerous factors? What groups use CBs in today? I know the stereotypes of truckers. Is that true? Do others use them? Sorry f...

Re: EMP and RF Blocking Experiment
While an EMP threat is relatively low on most official Hazard Mitigation Plans, the utter chaos it would cause is the reason it stays so high on the radar of many folks. First, it is one of two areas where even the world's biggest governments admit defeat. (The other is large asteroid.) Second, many...

Hello from Wichita
Hello! Checking in from the Wichita, KS area. I've been a lifelong outdoorsman. After a long (by industry standards) career in emergency response, I moved to government preparedness (please don't hate me for it). I do all-hazards contingency planning and preparedness, and specialize in bioterrorism ...
