Cool Tips and Tricks! Show us what ya got!

Post by Blackthorn-USA » Fri Apr 12, 2013 1:11 am

I wanted to start a thread discuss and show all the little tips and tricks people know for making things easier. I’m always amazed that there are still people out there that don’t know petroleum jelly and cotton balls make great tinder. So, even if it’s an old tip you’ve known for years, post it up. Some of us might think that’s the coolest most helpful thing ever! And as usual, pics are great

Here’s a cotton ball with a wipe of petroleum jelly on the outside burning in a rain shower. It burned about 5 minutes while getting hit by raindrops.

Here’s another handy little trick for when you find yourself with clothes to dry. Around here the wind will generally blow down about anything you put up. Trying to hang clothes to dry is challenging. Twisting your drying line eliminates the need for clothes pins and securely holds your clothes.

Here's quick trick to rescue a phone after dropping it in a toilet or otherwise getting it wet. Remove the battery, covers, memory cards etc and place all the pieces in a zip lock bag with a desiccant packet. Here we’re using a 6 gram packet. These desiccant moisture absorbers are often found in packages that electronics are shipped in. You can reactivate old ones by heating in your oven for an hour at 170 degrees or many places sell them, including us.

The desiccant packet will remove all of the moisture safely and there’s a good chance your phone will then work again. This is also a good way to remove fogging from camera lenses, binoculars etc.

A large diameter straw like the ones found at McDonalds makes a great waterproof container for storing a few Tylenol or other such tablets. Lasts a lot longer than a flimsy paper packet like single doses of medicine often come in. Just cut to length and melt the ends shut. Remember to write the contents on the outside of the container. You can also use them for instant tinder pack to keep you tinder dry. Just cut off the end, pull a little tinder out and light the entire thing.

A regular old pencil sharpener takes little room, weighs next to nothing and makes great shavings for fire starting. As an added bonus you are left with sharp sticks for stabbing scary spiders or other serious business. Oh, it also sharpens pencils.
